Lion's Mane: Focus Mushroom in Your Bone Broth
Share
If you've scanned the ingredients in a Súp broth and wondered why a mushroom keeps showing up next to the vegetables, this is the one people ask about most. Lion's mane appears in several of our broths — and it's earned the nickname "the focus mushroom." Here's what that actually means, without the hype.
What is lion's mane?
Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible functional mushroom named for its cascading white spines, which look a little like a lion's mane. It has a long history in East Asian food and traditional wellness practices, and a mild, savory flavor that folds naturally into a slow-simmered bone broth. In our kitchen it's one of a family of functional mushrooms we use, alongside reishi, cordyceps, turkey tail, maitake, shiitake and chaga.
Why is it called "the focus mushroom"?
Lion's mane is the most-studied functional mushroom when it comes to cognitive support, which is why it's become the go-to ingredient in the growing category of nootropic foods. Researchers have been interested in compounds it contains — hericenones and erinacines — and their relationship to nerve growth factor, a protein involved in the maintenance of healthy neurons. The research is genuinely promising and still developing; we think that's worth stating plainly rather than overselling. What we can say comfortably: lion's mane is a whole food traditionally enjoyed for mental clarity, and it makes a delicious, functional addition to a daily broth.
How to make it a daily ritual
The simplest approach is a warm 8 oz cup in the morning or early afternoon, when most people want to feel sharp and settled. Because bone broth is savory and protein-rich, it's a satisfying alternative to a mid-day coffee — no caffeine, no crash. Warm it gently rather than boiling, which keeps the flavor and texture at their best.
Which Súp broths contain lion's mane?
You'll find lion's mane in our Memory Focus & Gut Health broth — our seven-mushroom flagship, and the most-reviewed broth we make — as well as in Turmeric Collagen Immunity and Ginseng Burdock Vitality Recharge.
